What are photoluminescent reflectors?

Photoluminescent reflectors were innovated for MUSTO offshore sailing kit in the Volvo Ocean
Race in 2011-12. At night, it often feels like you are sailing blind. These reflectors capture
the energy of light sources during the day and release that energy as glow in the dark during
the night.







What are the benefits of photoluminescent
reflectors?


Wearing photoluminescent strips strategically placed for 360° visibility, you become more visible
in low light, increasing safety when torches are not close to hand. This is especially important in
competitive sailing where the teams need to be able to see each other. MUSTO photoluminescent
reflectors provide enhanced safety when torches are not always close to hand.

PHOTOLUMINESCENCE AT NIGHT

The photoluminescent material absorbs energy from a light source. This causes a reaction in the
material to produce energy seen as a glow. The photoluminescent material slowly releases this
energy over hours for long lasting visibility. This light is refracted through the top layer of the
reflector for an even brighter glow.
