WHAT TO WEAR

OFFSHORE SAILING

The unpredictable and often volatile conditions of offshore sailing present a multitude of challenges for sailors. While you can’t control the elements, you can master them with the right kit.

LAYERING

OUTER LAYER : An outer shell layer is an essential item for your kit bag. Shell layers are your primary shield against the elements so a good one must be extremely waterproof, windproof and breathable, to keep you warm, dry and comfortable on deck. Musto’s MPX range has been designed to exacting technical standards, with essential sailing features such as high visibility photoluminescent reflectors to keep you safe and visible in all conditions.

MID LAYER: A good mid layer provides warmth and weatherproof protection without adding bulk. Lightweight and breathable mid layers are ideal for the offshore sailor - utilise GORE-TEX® technical fabrics and Polartec® fleeces to keep the elements at bay. Their packable design allows you to stow them in your day bag ready for wind and rain.

BASE LAYER: Offshore sailors need their base layers to be highly breathable, lightweight and flexible. In hot conditions, the base layer may be all you wear on deck, so opt for UV treated garments to protect your skin from the sun. In cold conditions, your base needs to be warm and comfortable. Utilise technical fabrics, including merino wool, to optimise your gear’s wicking, thermal and breathable properties.

ACCESSORIES: No kit bag is complete for offshore sailing without the accessory essentials. Durable, supportive footwear is a must to keep your feet comfortable and protected. To keep the sun and water away from your eyes, opt for a peaked cap either in a fast dry or GORE-TEX fabric or a heat retentive fabric for colder environments.

PROVEN PERFORMANCE

Musto’s pioneering 3-Layer System has greatly enhanced the performance of inshore sailing athletes. Breathability, warmth and weatherproofing are the ultimate combination for optimal comfort. Whether they’re taking part in the America’s Cup or Cowes Round the Island Race, tests have shown that when sailors are protected, they’re focused.

The MUSTO 3-layer system is put through its paces in some of the most testing conditions on the planet. Ocean Race sailors wear MUSTO apparel to stay dry, comfortable and mobile in the brutal conditions of the open ocean. In race conditions, MUSTO sailors wear base layers for comfort against the skin, with sweat wicking properties of merino wool and other technical fabrics helping to keep competitors performing at their peak. Next is the added warmth and weather protection of the mid layer, where technologies such as durable water repellent (DWR) coated fleece and PrimaLoft® Insulation deliver breathable, warm protection. Finally, our HPX GORE-TEX® shell layers provide an all but impregnable barrier against the fury of the open ocean.
